Papers, 1881-1936, include miscellaneous correspondence to Lowry as express agent in Saint Louis (Mich.), concerning telephone and postal service, the fire department, and an invitation to the opening of the new post office in Saint Louis. Also included are materials related to the American Legion, including: constitution and by-laws of the Eighth District Countil, 1932, financial accounts of an American Legion fair, 1936, and a membership roster of American Legion Williams Fields Post no. 256 (Saint Louis, Mich.), undated. Some of the correspondence have suffered fire damage and are quite brittle and broken along fold lines.

Lowry was born April 13, 1854 near Romeo (Macomb County, Mich.), the son of William H. and Charlotte Lowry. At age 16 he became a clerk. At age 18, Lowry learned telegraphy, working in Vassar and eventually Bay City, where he managed the American Telegraph office at the Frazier House. Also, Lowry worked at the Saginaw Valley and Saint Louis Railroad Company depot in Saint Louis (Mich.) and as an agent for the American Express Company.
