Lowry was born April 13, 1854 near Romeo (Macomb County, Mich.), the son of William H. and Charlotte Lowry. At age 16 he became a clerk. At age 18, Lowry learned telegraphy, working in Vassar and eventually Bay City, where he managed the American Telegraph office at the Frazier House. Also, Lowry worked at the Saginaw Valley and Saint Louis Railroad Company depot in Saint Louis (Mich.) and as an agent for the American Express Company.
